At Highlands Aero, we provide the training and support you need to earn your CFI-Sport rating and begin teaching in light-sport aircraft. The CFI-S certificate can be obtained in about half the time required to become a traditional CFI. You can become a CFI-S without becoming a commercial pilot and still get paid to teach sport pilot students.
What Is a Sport Pilot CFI?
A Sport Pilot CFI is authorized to:
Provide flight instruction to students pursuing a Sport Pilot Certificate.
Endorse students for solo flights, knowledge tests, and practical exams in light-sport aircraft.
Train pilots seeking endorsements for additional sport aircraft categories.

Training Requirements
To qualify for the Sport Pilot Certified Flight Instructor program, you must:
Be 18 years old
Hold at least a Sport Pilot Certificate.
Have a valid FAA medical certificate or U.S. driver’s license.
Log a minimum of 150 total flight hours, including:
100 hours as Pilot-in-Command (PIC).
25 hours of cross-country flight.
15 hours in a light-sport aircraf
Pass the FAA Fundamentals of Instruction (FOI) and Flight Instructor-Sport knowledge tests.

Your training will take place in the Pipistrel Alpha Trainer, a reliable and efficient light-sport aircraft. This modern trainer provides an ideal platform for mastering instructional skills and ensuring student success. We also partner with Icarus TB&R who provide a Van's RV-12, and a Remos GX.

Cost of Training
The cost of becoming a Sport Pilot CFI will vary depending on your previous experience and training needs. Typical expenses include:
Aircraft rental: $155/hour.
Instructor fees for ground and flight training: $70/hour.
Knowledge test and practical exam fees (paid to the FAA or designated examiners).
